ILION – The new Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Spooktacular Vendor Bazaar raised about $1,100 for the Herkimer BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA, and more than 250 items were collected to donate to local veterans.

“The Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA chapter would like to thank the Mohawk Valley community members for their support of and attendance at our first annual Spooktacular Vendor Bazaar,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. “We also thank all the crafters and vendors who participated in this event. We are looking forward to next year!”

The Herkimer BOCES Spooktacular Vendor Bazaar took place on Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Remington school building in Ilion. The event featured crafters, vendors, trick-or-treat stations, pumpkin painting, face painting, fall crafts, games, a bake sale, a Chinese auction and two foods trucks: the Corner Office and Mangia Macrina’s Wood Fired Pizza.

Rebecca Badger, of Utica, took Trista Layfield, 9, of Utica, and Savannah Grisham, 6, of Utica, to the Spooktacular.

“It’s fun,” Badger said, as Trista and Savannah got their faces painted by Herkimer BOCES cosmetology student Shelby Peplinski and visual communications media arts students Sierra Gonzalez. “It’s definitely a kids’ event.”

In total, 23 students worked at the event under the supervision of their advisors. They were able to earn hours for community service required for graduation. The students helped to set up, check-in crafters and vendors, collect the Feed Our Vets donations, provide trick-or-treats to children, face paint, and pumpkin paint. They also helped operate the bake sale and auction.

The about $1,100 raised for SkillsUSA will be used to offset the cost of students attending SkillsUSA conferences throughout the school year. Last school year, Herkimer BOCES students advanced to the local, regional, state and national conferences.

The more than 250 food, household and hygiene items collected at the Spooktacular will be donated to local veterans through the Feed Our Vets organization.

The Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA chapter is continuing to take donations through Jan. 19, 2018. Donations can be made by dropping them off at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer with attention to the cosmetology department.

These donations will be brought to the Area II SkillsUSA conference on Feb. 2, 2018, at Morrisville State College, where they will be put with other Area II schools’ donations and given to Feed Our Vets as one overall donation. SkillsUSA Area II has selected the Feed Our Vets organization for its community service project this year.
