HERKIMER – The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES adult practical nursing program’s 53rd Commencement and Pledge Ceremony saw 44 local adults complete an education that will allow them to work as licensed practical nurses and/or continue their education.

Herkimer BOCES Chief Operating Officer James Picolla said during the ceremony that the graduation is a reminder of what BOCES represents, which is continued learning and seeking careers that you love.

Picolla congratulated the graduates and wished them luck with their careers.

“Our lives are literally in your hands now,” he said.

The Commencement and Pledge Ceremony took place on June 21 at Herkimer High School. Herkimer BOCES Board of Education President Daniel LaLonde presented the diplomas as nursing faculty awarded graduation pins, nursing program Coordinator Sara Nicolette led a candle-lighting ceremony, nursing instructor Janet Vickers led the students in a nursing pledge and Herkimer BOCES Director of Adult, Early Childhood and Outreach Education Mary Kline officially announced the nursing Class of 2017 as graduated.

The adult practical nursing program offers both a full-time class and part-time classes that can either be taken during the day or evening. One student from each class gave a farewell address at the graduation: Courtney Burke for the full-time class, Jose Alvarado for the part-time, day class and Beth Jasewicz for the part-time, evening class.

The speakers touched on a wide variety of topics. Burke said it was a demanding year, but the knowledge and confidence gained was worth every effort. Alvarado said that on the first day, he wondered what he got himself into, but his classmates went from strangers to family through great and tough times. Jasewicz, like the other speakers, thanked their teachers, family and friends for their support.

Christina Ham, a registered nurse at Crouse Hospital, was the guest speaker for the commencement. She talked about her background including graduating from Ilion in 2004, before deciding to go to the Herkimer BOCES adult practical nursing program and graduating from it in 2009. That led to her earning an associate degree from Mohawk Valley Community College and to her current job.

“I knew that the key to my success was education,” she said.

The sacrifices that she made along the way were worth it, Ham said.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I had the potential to be where I am today,” she said.

Ham gave the graduates some advice for working in the field such as anticipating patients’ needs and using critical thinking.

She said she hopes that graduating from the program won’t be the end of graduates’ thirst for knowledge, and she encouraged them to continue to always strive to be more.

“Every day offers an opportunity to challenge yourself,” she said.
