Farming Your Future to feature 50-plus agricultural exhibitors
for almost 1,200 students from 25 local schools

May 12, 2017

FRANKFORT – There are now more than 50 agricultural exhibitors confirmed for the inaugural Farming Your Future from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds.

Almost 1,200 students from 25 school districts in the greater Mohawk Valley region have signed up to attend this unprecedented event. Farming Your Future is for students, chaperones and invited guests only, and it is not open to the general public.

Some of the many participating exhibitors include Chobani, Clinton Tractor, Massoud’s Tree Farm, Mycogen Seeds, White’s Farm Supply, local farmers, several booths from the state Department of Agriculture and Markets and many more have been divided among four agriculture zones students will visit. The four zones are plant science, animal science, end products and technology and equipment.

Growing the event

Farming Your Future is a collaborative partnership among Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and Madison-Oneida BOCES – led by the Herkimer BOCES School To Careers program and the STC Agriculture Committee.

“The passion and the dedication shown by the members of the STC faculty drove this event,” said STC Director Dr. Christopher Groves, whose Ph.D. has a focus on rural education.

The Farming Your Future tagline of “where agriculture meets education” starts with the foundation: The STC Agriculture Committee, which is made up of local educators and professionals in the agriculture career field.

There will be many student volunteers on hand during the event. Herkimer BOCES culinary students will be preparing food for exhibitors, and Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES culinary students Herkimer BOCES students and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill FFA students will be supporting the day in various roles.

The event also is made possible by several great sponsors. Farming Your Future is sponsored by Byrne Dairy, Cabot Cheese, Carlo Masi Sons and Daughters, Chobani, Doug Thompson, Hannaford, Nirvana, Stewart’s Shops, Utz Quality Foods and Walmart.

How the day will go

Students will arrive as their school transportation allows and will start rotating through the four zones at 9 a.m. Some school districts will be grouped with other districts, allowing students from different schools to explore the day together.

Each agriculture zone will have two zone leaders, an adult support person and a student support person, to help ensure everything goes smoothly. Each group of students also will have at least one student support person serving as a group leader. Each group will be assigned an animal for the day, and the group leader will hold up a sign with that animal on it to help students follow their group from zone to zone.

Throughout the day, there will be three rotating mainstage presenters that students will be able to watch:
  • Stockbridge Valley FFA: 9:30 to 10 a.m. and noon to 12:30 p.m.

  • Mohawk Valley Community College Drones: 10:10 to 10:40 a.m. and 12:40 to 1:10 p.m.

  • Finger Lakes Dairy – Robotic Milking Parlor: 10:50 to 11:20 a.m. and 1:20 to 1:50 p.m.
Students also will be provided lunch and will visit a pledge station, where they will be able to make a pledge on “making a lifetime of informed choices respecting agriculture and the environment.”

The village of Frankfort police and fire departments will be on hand as well as the Mohawk Valley Ambulance Corps.
