Herkimer BOCES students gain forklift certification
March 2, 2016

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES heavy equipment operation students pose with a forklift from Clinton Tractor that they used to take their forklift certification tests on Friday, Feb. 26, and Monday, Feb. 29. Some students from the outdoor power equipment and welding classes also gained their certifications.

HERKIMER – About 30 Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students recently had the opportunity to get certified in forklift operation by Clinton Tractor.

Students took a written exam and a performance test during which they moved the forklift through an obstacle course of cones and moved around a pallet. They had to be able to pick up the pallet, drive forwards and backwards and set the pallet in another spot.

Having the chance to gain experience and certification with the forklift will benefit the students, Herkimer BOCES heavy equipment operation instructor Tom Browka said.

“These students are more hands-on, and it gives them the opportunity to get used to it and get their confidence up,” Browka said. “It gets them certification with the machine, and it stays with them the rest of their lives.”

Clinton Tractor brought a forklift to Herkimer BOCES for the students to use, and Jason Taylor, of Clinton Tractor, oversaw the certification tests on Friday, Feb. 26, and Monday, Feb. 29.

It’s much appreciated that Clinton Tractor provided the service for free, Browka said.

There were students from the heavy equipment operation, outdoor power equipment and welding classes who received their forklift certifications.

Some jobs in the industry require a background of being able to operate a forklift, so it’s good that the students could gain their certification, Taylor said.

“It gives them an idea of what to expect,” Taylor said, “and this gives them a little bit of a bump in their experience.”
