Culinary is integrated into the special programs class career preparation class on a daily basis.

HERKIMER – Whether it’s baking cookies or discussing kitchen knife safety, one aspect of culinary is integrated into class every day for students in the special programs career preparation class at Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.

Teaching students how to cook and be safe and sanitary in the kitchen gives them good hands-on experience and is an important aspect of the overall goal of the 12:1:3:1 class, teachers Georgia Waite and Jeanni Romanowski said.

“It’s a life skill that everyone needs,” Waite said. “Hopefully, they take those skills with them when they graduate and they at least will be able to make a meal for themselves instead of relying on somebody else. That’s big for their independence.”

The hope is that some of the students will move onto a culinary class if they want to and that they will have opportunities to obtain jobs in the food industry, Waite said.

This school year, the students have made pizza, soups, salads, sandwiches, breads, fruits, vegetables and more. They were also taught about kitchen tools and how to properly use them.

“There’s always something to learn,” Waite said.
