Search continues for new district superintendent

On June 3rd, the Herkimer BOCES Board of Education conducted final interviews of candidates for District Superintendent & Chief Executive Officer of the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.† The Board narrowed their search down to two candidates.† They are: Mr. James Picolla and Mrs. Sandra Sherwood.

On June 8th and June 12th, the Herkimer BOCES Board of Education will continue its search process for a new District Superintendent when the two finalists visit the BOCES. During the visits, the candidates will tour the WEB Complex, meet with representatives of the administrative, instructional and non-instructional staff, component superintendents and community partners.† Following the visits by the final candidates, and review of the stakeholder feedback, the Board of Education will determine their finalist(s) and advance them to the Commissioner of Education for her consideration.††The Commissioner will review the candidate credentials and conduct an interview.†† Once she meets with the candidates, she will share her findings with the Board so that they may finalize their decision. Finally, The Commissioner will forward the Board a formal order which allows the hiring of the District Superintendent.

Sandra Sherwood will be at the BOCES on June 8th.† Mrs. Sherwood currently serves as the Superintendent of the Dryden school district, a position she has held since 2008. She spent four years prior to that as Drydenís K-5 Principal. Before joining Dryden, she served as a K-6 Technology Teacher, Network Administrator and District Technology Coordinator in the Marathon school district. She has served as the coordinator or administrator for committees addressing contract negotiations, strategic planning, district safety, SED reporting, facilities planning, APPR, RIC advisory council, professional development and instructional planning. She has also served as a regional representative to the statewide Council of School Superintendents and was a member of the SED review team for an identified school in Syracuse. Mrs. Sherwood holds an associateís degree from Broome Community College in early childhood education, a bachelorís degree and a masterís degree in elementary education from SUNY Cortland, and a CAS in Educational Leadership from SUNY Cortland.

James Picolla will be at the BOCES on June 12th.† Mr. Picolla currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer at Herkimer BOCES and has served as Assistant Superintendent for Administration there since 2014. He has also served Herkimer BOCES as the Director of Planning and Personnel, Director of Secondary Programs, Director of Career and Technical Education and Principal of Career and Technical Education and Alternative Education. Mr. Picolla served as Superintendent of the Owen D. Young Central School from 2012-2014, and before joining Herkimer BOCES, he was a band director in Waterville, Chenango Valley and Unadilla Valley school districts. He is a member of the statewide Council of School Superintendentsí cabinet committee and has previously served on the board of the Association for Career and Technical Education Administrators, the Mohawk Region Teacher Center and SkillsUSA New York. He holds a bachelorís degree in music from Syracuse University, a masterís degree in music from Morehead State University, and a CAS in educational leadership from SUNY Cortland.

The Board anticipates an appointment of the new District Superintendent in late June following the Commissionerís order.
