Herkimer BOCES students win awards at state SkillsUSA competition

Three Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students won award at the 51st SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships from April 26-28 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds. From left: Brandon Ward, a senior Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student from Little Falls who won third place in small engine basic; Alyssa Cummings, a senior Herkimer BOCES cosmetology student from Mount Markham who won first place in cosmetology senior and Brandon Loiacano, a junior Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student from Mount Markham who won third place in motorcycle service technology.



Three Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students recently placed during the SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships at the New York State SkillsUSA State Conference.

The students who placed were:
  • Brandon Ward, a senior Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student from Little Falls, won third place in small engine basic.
     
  • Brandon Loiacano, a junior Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student from Mount Markham, won third place in motorcycle service technology.
     
  • Alyssa Cummings, a senior Herkimer BOCES cosmetology student from Mount Markham, won first place in cosmetology senior.
Cummings will represent New York state at the SkillsUSA National Conference from June 19-23 in Louisville, Ky.

“I’m proud of their hard work and dedication to their respective vocational training programs,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor.

The 51st SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships took place from April 26-28 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds. Herkimer BOCES students first competed at the SkillsUSA Area 2 Regional Competition held at Morrisville State College on Feb. 10 before advancing to the state competition.

Here is the list of Herkimer BOCES winners from the regional competition:
  • Jordan Roberts: third place in advertising design.
     
  • Alyssa Cummings: third place in cosmetology senior.
     
  • Isaiah Oord: third place in customer service.
     
  • Sharon Hamilton: third place in employment application process basic.
     
  • Brandon Loiacano: second place in motorcycle service technology.
     
  • Griffin Parker: third place in power equipment technology.
     
  • Skylar Whittle: third place in related technical math.
     
  • Brandon Ward: second place in small engine service.
     
  • Ryan Betts: third place in small engine service.

The Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA students were able to attend the competitions in part because of funds raised during the annual Cruise-In Bike Night Chicken BBQ. This year’s Cruise-In event takes place on June 15 at Herkimer BOCES.
