HERKIMER – As F.X. Matt Brewing Co. Packaging Manager Daniel Voce recently led a tour of three Central Valley Academy juniors around the brewery, he pointed out the many jobs being done and the connections the company has to various industries.

The company relies on agriculture for the brewing products, science for the brewing process, transportation for shipping products and advertising and marketing to sell the products, Voce said, as examples.

“You don’t just come and make beer and soda – there’s all that other stuff that goes into it,” he said. “There are all sorts of career and job opportunities.”

The F.X. Matt Brewing Co. tour was just one of many job shadowing opportunities the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES School To Careers program set up for Central Valley Academy juniors on Feb. 1 and 2 at 45 local businesses. The STC job shadowing experiences were designed to introduce students to local career opportunities in fields they’re interested in.

Voce, who is a Herkimer BOCES Board of Education member, stressed to students to take school seriously because what they’re learning can be applied to their careers. Even if you don’t believe the material you’re learning in class is something you will use in the future, the process of how you learn the material will be applicable and helpful when you need to learn things for your job, he told the students.

“It’s not the information,” he said. “It’s the process through which I learned to hold it in my brain.”

Students were able to tour and learn about everything from the brewing process to the bottling to the storage and loading docks – and they got to try some of the Saranac sodas.

Along the tour, Voce spoke with workers who didn’t have college degrees but have worked at the brewery for many years, own houses and have families.

“Success is what you define success to be,” Voce said, to the students. “Lots of very successful people have been here a long time.”

Voce said he appreciates that the Herkimer BOCES School To Careers program provides the opportunity to introduce students to mid-level skills jobs that don’t require college degrees.

“I think it’s imperative for students to have the opportunity to see other avenues other than your classic college route,” he said. “There are avenues other than college, and you can be quite successful.”

Central Valley Academy junior Dennis Lotoski, 16, appreciated the message from the tour.

“I think it was good to see that there are opportunities,” Lotoski said. “It’s good to see there are jobs you can get without a college degree because a lot of people might not be ready to get a college degree.”

Lotoski said he enjoyed the brewery tour and didn’t realize how big everything was in the brewery or how many different jobs there were.

“I really didn’t,” Lotoski said. “I thought it was more automated work.”

Another bit of advice Voce emphasized to the students was about taking the right approach to school and work.

“You cannot underestimate having a positive attitude and willingness to learn,” he said. “Every day is a new opportunity to succeed.”

Central Valley student and Herkimer Police patrolman
Central Valley Academy junior Andrew Grosse, 17, had a job shadowing experience on Feb. 2 with Herkimer Police Department Patrolman Matthew Wright through the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES School To Careers program. Grosse was with Herkimer police from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and participated in a ride-along during which someone was pulled over and they wrote a ticket. Grosse said he has been interested in going into law enforcement since watching the show “Cops” when he was little. “I thought, ‘Yeah, I could do that,’” he said. “You don’t have to be in an office. You can help people.”
