ILION – Some eighth-grade Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Pathways Academy at Remington students recently learned more about the Civil War when reenactor Jason Wolczanski of Sauquoit visited their classroom.

Wolczanski presents to students about the Civil War to help spread the message of an important lesson that can be learned from history.

“The Civil War happened because people on both sides failed to listen to each other,” he said. I do this to help remind people how important communication is with the hope that things like the Civil War won’t happen again.”

Wolczanski was dressed in a full Civil War era uniform when he presented “A Soldier’s Life During the Civil War” to students on Sept. 23 in the class of Pathways Academy social studies teacher Greg Jaros. He brought along Civil War era uniforms and equipment, and he allowed students to examine musket balls pulled from a battlefield near Vicksburg and sample “hard tack,” a cracker-like staple of a soldier’s diet.

Through the presentation and interaction, students were able to imagine what it was like to be in the Civil War.

“The saltine things were not that nasty, but if I were in the Civil War and had to eat them every day I would get sick of eating them,” student Bailey Dayton said.

Student Andrew Synder also enjoyed the presentation.

“My favorite part was looking at the clothes,” he said.
