Herkimer BOCES honors students for completing CTE programs
June 28, 2016

Health science careers students graduate
Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES health science careers students are recognized on stage during the Herkimer BOCES career and technical education completion and awards ceremony on June 14 in the Little Falls High School Auditorium.

LITTLE FALLS – When Melissa Ippolito decided as a high-school junior to join the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES health science careers program, she had no idea where the decision would take her. She thought maybe it would just lead to a short-term job to make some money while in high school and college.

Ippolito went on to become a registered nurse and is now the director of nursing at Valley Health Services in Herkimer.

As Ippolito delivered this message to Herkimer BOCES 2016 graduates during the career and technical education completion and awards ceremony on June 14 in the Little Falls High School Auditorium, she told the students that their CTE programs gave them the preparation needed to succeed.

“Dream big and conquer any obstacles you encounter,” she said. “You have the skills to do so.”

More than 200 local students completed their Herkimer BOCES journey at the June 14 ceremony, and students were also recognized for awards and scholarships they won.

The event opened with comments from Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua and a video produced by the visual communication media arts students.

As students walked across the stage to be recognized for completing their CTE programs, awards were presented by Herkimer BOCES Board of Education President Daniel LaLonde, CTE Principal Kathy Fox and Assistant Principal Ryan DeMars.

DeMars said last year was his first as assistant principal, so this is his first class of students as an administrator to see graduate.

“Congratulations to all of you,” he said. “It’s been an honor and a privilege. I’m proud of each and every one of you.”

Fox also congratulated all the award and scholarship winners and asked students to remember their training and 21st century skills they learned.

She offered advice to the students such as to manage impulsivity, be accepting of others and listen to opposing points of view. She also discussed the importance of persevering through life’s difficulties and that the students have shown the ability to do so by completing their CTE programs.

“Today, you have all persevered,” she said.

Ippolito, who graduated from the health science careers program in 1993, said the completion and awards ceremony is an important part in the book of their lives because they can now either turn the book into a bestseller or not finish it.

“Graduation is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another,” she said.

She encouraged the students to make life be a lifelong learning experience. She gave advice about their futures such as handling college and careers.

“The years will fly by, but the memories will last a lifetime,” she said.

Through it all, it’s important to follow your own path, she said.

“Stay true to yourself,” she said.

Ippolito also thanked her health science careers teacher Brenda Goodfriend, who is retired this year. Goodfriend’s legacy will be carried on through her students, who are now amazing healthcare professionals all over the area, Ippolito said.

Lastly, Ippolito shared some advice for the students that she gathered from Valley Health Services residents such as to work hard, continue their education, respect their elders and don’t take anything for granted.
