SYRACUSE – Four Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students recently placed during the SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships at the New York State SkillsUSA State Conference.

The students who placed were:
  • Emily Ward-Case, a Herkimer BOCES cosmetology student of Mount Markham, won second place in job interviewing.

  • Austin Catlin, a Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student of Mount Markham, won third place in equipment technology.

  • Adam Kessler, a Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student of Poland, won third place in small engine service.

  • Raekwon Willis, a Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student of Central Valley Academy, won third place in motorcycle mechanics.

“These students worked hard all year to compete against other students from all over the state and be recognized in the top three,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor.

The Herkimer BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA sent 22 students and five advisors to the conference, which took place from April 27-29 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds.

The students said they were surprised and excited when they found out they placed. Kessler said he considered the conference to be a learning experience.

“There was a lot of cool stuff around,” he said.

The Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA students were able to attend the conference in part because of funds raised during the annual Cruise-In Bike Night Chicken BBQ. This year’s Cruise-In event takes place on June 16 at Herkimer BOCES.
