ILION – With their graduation coming up on June 29, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES adult practical nursing students were able to meet with local college and business representatives on Wednesday May 11, during the annual Herkimer BOCES job fair for adult nursing students.

New Hartford resident Sarah Pulliam, a student in the Herkimer BOCES part-time evening class, said the job fair is helpful and well-timed.

“I like that the school provides the opportunity for the students to see what’s out there before we finish,” she said.

The Herkimer BOCES adult practical nursing program offers a full-time class, a part-time day class and a part-time evening class. The job fair at the Herkimer BOCES Remington Educational Complex in Ilion featured 22 stations with representatives from local colleges and businesses, and students were required to visit every table.

Colleen Thomas, human resources director at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, talked with students during the job fair.

“It’s great,” she said. “We have hired LPNs in the past, and they’re doing wonderful.”

Thomas said she also likes that the job fair is beneficial for students.

“I think it’s wonderful that they can come to one place and meet all these people and talk to them,” she said.

Part-time day student Heather Gates, of West Winfield, said at the beginning of the job fair that she was looking forward to visiting all of the stations.

“I’m excited to get started,” she said.

Part-time evening student John Saltis, of Herkimer, also commented on appreciating having the job fair available to the students.

“I think it’s a great program,” he said.

Part-time evening student Antoinette Thrash, of Utica, said she hoped she might find a job while meeting with local companies during the event.

“I wouldn’t see why not,” she said. “There are so many opportunities.”

The application process and testing for the September 2016 full-time, part-time day and part-time evening classes have begun.
