Herkimer BOCES heavy equipment students earn OSHA certifications
April 20, 2016

Heavy equipment operation students receive OSHA training
Rodney Giarrusso, safety director and construction authorized OSHA trainer of HR Beebe Inc., speaks to Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES heavy equipment operation students while providing them with training to earn Occupational Safety and Health Administration certifications.

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES heavy equipment operation students recently received Occupational Safety and Health Administration training from Rodney Giarrusso, safety director and construction authorized OSHA trainer of HR Beebe Inc.

Students who completed the training received OSHA 10 certifications, which the Department of Labor Relations requires for work on public jobs that are worth $250,000 or more. Having the certification gives students an advantage with construction companies, Giarusso said.

“I think this benefits the students because they become more employable right out of school,” he said.

Giarusso provided the OSHA training each day of a full school week. He told the students about safety standards for the construction industry dealing with aspects such as electricity and heavy equipment.

The plan is to provide the OSHA 10 certification opportunity for seniors every year, said Herkimer BOCES heavy equipment operation instructor Tom Browka, who also received his certification along with his students.

“With OSHA 10 certification, employers will hire these guys over someone else who doesn’t already have it,” Browka said. “This adds to their higher employability opportunities.”

Students also get to hear the real-life consequences of how you act when doing work in this field, Browka said.

“It’s a good wakeup call for the seniors because they realize if they make unsafe choices, it might not affect just them – the company could get fined,” he said.

It’s beneficial that Giarusso is not just someone who can teach the training but also is someone who works in the field, Browka said.

“He’s got a wealth of knowledge and experience that he still lives daily, so it makes it very applicable for students with real-life stories,” Browka said.

H.R. Beebe Inc. is a full-service general construction and construction management company based in Utica. Founded 104 years ago, the company can provide any construction training, Giarusso said.
