Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students won 11 awards during the recent SkillsUSA Area II Regional Conference at Morrisville State College.

During the event on Feb. 26, 41 students from career and technical education programs and Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School participated, along with five advisors. Three students participated in the House of Delegates, while 38 students competed in various competitions related to the BOCES skilled and technical programs. There also were 33 students and four advisors who completed their statesman award.

“We had a very successful conference, and the students and advisors are looking forward to the state conference as SkillsUSA celebrates 50 years in April,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor.

One of the awards was given out before the event. Herkimer BOCES visual communications media arts student Zachery Smith, of Frankfort-Schuyler, won first place in the pin design competition. This meant that his design was used for the conference shirt and pin that all participants received.

Smith said it was “cool” to see everybody wearing his design during the event.

Another student who won a first place award was Herkimer BOCES outdoor power equipment student Raekwon Willis, of Central Valley. He took the top prize in the motorcycle service technology competition, and he said it felt good to win.

“It was surprising,” he said.

The following is a list of all the other Herkimer BOCES students who placed and the awards they won:
  • Outdoor power equipment student Austin Catlin, of Mount Markham: third place in power equipment technology.

  • Cosmetology student Sade DesLosSantos, of Central Valley: third place in prepared speech.

  • Culinary and hospitality student Susan Doris, of Little Falls: second place in commercial baking.
