HERKIMER – Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students in the heavy equipment operation program now have access to a delivery truck loaned to the program through the end of the year by Clinton Tractor and Implement Co. owner John Calidonna.

The former Herkimer BOCES natural resource management program was split this year into a heavy equipment operation program and a conservation program in order to further focus the programs on students’ interests.

In the heavy equipment operation program, students study the use of dump trucks and heavy equipment, equipment preventative maintenance, basic safety, personal protection safety, hand tools and power tools and National Center for Construction Education and Research curriculum.

In a work-based learning environment, students learn Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, American National Standards Institute hand signals and Dig Safely NY standards. They have the opportunity to operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, tractors, front-end loaders, excavators, forklifts, dump trucks and hand and power tools.

The donated delivery truck, which is an International, has a commercial driver’s license rating, so it will allow the students to train for a Class B commercial driver’s license, Herkimer BOCES heavy equipment operation program instructor Thomas Browka said.

The Class B designation means students who pass the permit test can be hired to drive a straight rig such as a dump truck, but not a tractor trailer, which you have to be 21 or older to drive.

Having access to the truck until Jan. 1, 2016, gives the students enough time to study with and practice using the delivery truck, Browka said.

Calidonna also donated a wagon running gear for the students to practice with until they have gained the skills needed.

In addition, Calidonna has offered other pieces of equipment for educational use at a minimal fee – much lower than industry rates at a savings of thousands of dollars – for the benefit of the program, Browka said. For example, the program purchased a tractor from Clinton Tractor at a discounted rate, Browka said.
