Herkimer BOCES cosmetology students gain
hands-on experience with salon open to community

Oct. 7, 2015

Cosmetology clinic
Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES cosmetology student Naiya Patel, 17, of Herkimer, does work for a community member on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Salon Illusions, the cosmetology clinic for senior students. The salon is open to community members by appointment only from 9-11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. To make an appointment, call 315-867-2043.

HERKIMER – There’s an easy way to help Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES cosmetology students obtain valuable experience that could help them for future jobs.

All you have to do is treat yourself to salon and spa services at Salon Illusions, the Herkimer BOCES cosmetology clinic, where senior students provide services including cuts, coloring, manicures, pedicures, waxing and more under the supervision of instructor Holly Rotundo Fischer and teaching assistant Sarah Jacquays-Alberts.

“This allows them to have real-life work experience and master their salon skills,” Rotundo Fischer said. “It prepares them for entry-level employment in a salon.”

Salon Illusions is open to community members by appointment only from 9-11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. To make an appointment, call 315-867-2043.

There is a range of costs for services such as $5 for nail art, $7 for haircuts with styling and $12 for OPI gel polishing. Proceeds from the clinic are used to help offset the cost of supplies used during the clinic.

Monday, Oct. 5, was the first day the cosmetology clinic was open this school year.

Cosmetology student Sierra Graham, 17, of Frankfort-Schuyler, said she has been enjoying the opportunity to work with clients.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “It’s a really good experience – good hands-on.”

In addition to helping students practice their salon skills, the clinic also allows them to work on their communication skills for talking to clients, Graham said.

Graham plans to go to Herkimer College for business and administration and would like to later open a salon.
Naiya Patel, 17, of Herkimer, plans to use her cosmetology skills as a side job while she attends LeMoyne College and pursues becoming a physician.

Patel had some butterflies during the first week of the clinic.

“I think it’s kind of scary, but I really like it so far,” she said. “I think it’s good work experience.”

Kayleigh Clark, 17, of Central Valley Academy, also enjoys the cosmetology clinic.

“It’s so much fun,” she said. “I wouldn’t trade it.”

Clark had her first client on Monday, Oct. 5, and did a cut and color.

“It was fun,” she said. “It was better than working on a mannequin.”

Clark plans to obtain a business degree and a barber’s license, which would open up many options for her that she would take advantage of, she said. The cosmetology program and the clinic have been a great way to get started down that path, she said.

“I recommend it for sure,” she said. “It gets you ahead of the game.”
