Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES adult education student Kristen Lee had plenty of motivating factors when she began her attempt to receive a high school diploma through the Herkimer BOCES program.

As Lee gave a speech at the Herkimer BOCES adult literacy graduation on June 17 at Herkimer BOCES, she said decided to go through the National External Diploma program because she needed to finish what she started and set a good example for her children. Her first attempt at earning a diploma was cut short as a high-school senior, when she dropped out to raise her son, and she also tried a second time before this to earn a diploma.

This time was different for Lee because without the diploma she felt ashamed and like something was missing, so she needed to complete her goal. She also wants to start a career in nursing as a registered nurse, so she pushed herself to take this step toward that mission.

“The importance of education is that it equips us with tools that are needed to make our dreams come true and open doors to brilliant career opportunities. Since I was a kid, my dream has always been to graduate and go to college to become an RN,” Lee said. “I never regretted dropping out of school my senior year to raise my son. He was my first priority, and I knew one day I would be able to go back and finish what I started.”

Lee and more than 40 other students earned their diplomas this school year through Herkimer BOCES adult education programs – taking either the path of the National External Diploma program or the high school equivalency test called the Test Assessing Secondary Completion or TASC.

During the ceremony on June 17, Herkimer BOCES Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Laurie Hedges welcomed the graduates, their families and Herkimer BOCES adult education staff. She called the event one of her favorites each year because it’s all about perseverance and getting up more times than you fall down.

“We all – everyone in this room – applaud your achievement,” Hedges said.

Hedges also said the students know they couldn’t have done this alone, so she asked them to immediately thank the people who have helped them – leading to hugs and messages of thanks all around the lobby at Herkimer BOCES.

During the ceremony, Herkimer BOCES Board of Education President Daniel LaLonde also praised the students for their perseverance and congratulated them on receiving their diplomas.

Herkimer BOCES Adult, Early Childhood and Outreach Education Director Mary Kline congratulated the students, gave recognition to their teachers and later offered additional congratulations, encouragement and advice through reading the Curious George book, “Curious You: On Your Way!”
