Herkimer County high-school students
invited to nanotechnology tours July 10, Aug. 14

June 19, 2015

High-school students in Herkimer County will have two opportunities this summer to learn more about nanotechnology and potential career opportunities.

Students can sign up now for a free tour of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany on Friday, July 10, or Friday, Aug. 14.

With nanotechnology efforts underway at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Utica Campus, jobs in the field are projected to come to the Mohawk Valley, so this tour could give students an early look at possible career paths for them.

The Workforce Investment Board of Herkimer, Madison and Oneida Counties is sponsoring the tours, and the free trips are funded by a grant secured from the New York State Higher Education Services Corp.

Students who sign up for either tour will depart at 8 a.m. on their travel day from Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. A coach bus will transport the students, and the nanotechnology tours will last from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lunch is provided on-site from 1-1:45 p.m. in Albany. Students will arrive back at Herkimer BOCES at 4 p.m.
To maximize the impact of the travel time, representatives of post-secondary education have been invited to send a representative on each trip to distribute marketing materials or discuss their college course offerings with students. Staff from the Herkimer Working Solutions Career Center will also be available to offer career counseling during the trip.

Space is limited, so interested students should contact either Herkimer BOCES Director of Academic Services Roberta Matthews (email: rmatthews@herkimer-boces.org or phone: 315-867-2032) or Herkimer Working Solutions Career Center Manager Karin Zipko (email: kzipko@herkimercounty.org or phone: 315-867-1459).

Adults also are invited to attend the event and will need to submit photo identification prior to the trip.
