HERKIMER – A Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES 12:1:3:1 classroom recently found a way to turn old shoes into presents for their mothers.

The special programs students in the class of teachers Georgia Waite and Jeanni Romanowski started off by recycling sneakers, boots, high heels and other footwear for the project. After they covered the shoes with a clear coat and white paint, art teacher Meghan Murphy-Pagano taught them ideas for using tempera paint for designs that incorporated different colors, dots or patterns.

Students had already planted seeds for edible plants such as oregano, and Waite purchased additional ones from Annutto’s Greenhouses in East Herkimer. All of the plants used were edible including the flowers, and the plants were placed into the decorated shoes.

“And then the kids got to bring them home for Mother’s Day,” Waite said. “It went for recycling, and it was functional.”

The idea behind the project was for the students to show their appreciation for their mothers and that they understand why their parents need to set boundaries for them, Waite said.

The students also made chocolate-dipped strawberries for their mothers. Romanowski showed the students how to dip fresh strawberries in chocolate, nuts and sprinkles and drizzle them with white chocolate. The students then placed the strawberries in containers to complete the presents for their moms.
