West Canada Valley names new superintendent
Elementary Principal Donald Shepardson to start as superintendent Jan. 1, 2015
Oct. 16, 2014

The West Canada Valley Board of Education voted Tuesday, Oct. 14, to appoint Elementary Principal Donald J. Shepardson (D.J.) as the new superintendent of schools starting Jan. 1, 2015, pending completion of contract negotiations.

In addition to serving as elementary principal for the past four years, Shepardson worked for 12 years as a high school social studies teacher at West Canada Valley and has coached the boys varsity basketball and baseball teams.

“Mr. Shepardson’s experience as a teacher, coach and administrator – along with his knowledge about West Canada Valley Central School District – will be a great asset for staff, students, parents and the community,” Interim Superintendent Nick Fazio said. “More importantly, he is committed to and focused on providing an excellent learning environment for all students in the district.”

Former West Canada Valley Superintendent John Banek resigned from the position in August to accept the job of director of athletics, health and safe schools for the New Hartford Central School District. The West Canada Valley Board of Education accepted Banek’s resignation and named retired Richfield Springs Superintendent Nick Fazio as interim superintendent as they searched for a permanent hire.

For the remainder of 2014, Fazio will work with Shepardson and Junior/Senior High School Principal Frank Sutliff to provide for a smooth transition. This will include selecting an interim elementary principal to replace Shepardson beginning Jan. 1, 2015. The district will later conduct a search for a permanent replacement as elementary principal.

“I’ve been here with the district since 1997,” Shepardson said. “It’s certainly an honor to be given this opportunity to help lead this school into the future.”
