Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua
comments on statewide scores for Common Core Assessments

Aug. 14, 2014

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua:

“This afternoon, Commissioner King presented statewide data on grade 3-8 Common Core Assessments. Since this is the first opportunity we have had to measure growth on these new standards, there will likely be additional scrutiny around the release and so I appreciate the context within which the commissioner placed these data. We are four years into a 12-year effort to graduate students who are college and career ready as defined by these new rigorous standards, and our schools are working very hard to meet that goal. We have been testing students for generations, and while the content has changed, assessments are still about evidence of progress and clues to improve student learning.

“Conclusions about our local results will require more time and analysis, but general results are encouraging given the challenges we face. Lack of resources continues to be an issue, but many poor schools have found ways to compensate, and we will learn from their efforts. As the commissioner discussed results this afternoon in Albany, our BOCES-region principals and superintendents were meeting together to learn and plan for continued improvement. I am proud of the work they have done and continue to do.

“While the Common Core standards have been controversial, I hope parents will continue to understand that the ultimate goal is to give their children at least an even shot at prosperity as adults. No one who honestly examines the current state of our economy and the poor prospects many of our children have at financial independence could conclude that there is no need for this difficult undertaking.”
