Reconfigured 10-member Herkimer BOCES board
elects president, vice president
July 22, 2014
HERKIMER – The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Board of Education recently conducted its first organizational meeting as a 10-member board and elected its leadership.
Board member Daniel LaLonde was elected to serve as president for a second term, and Thomas Shypski was elected to a second term as vice president.
The Herkimer BOCES Board of Education now has 10 members – as opposed to nine previously – due to a decision the board made in October 2013.
Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua recommended the change following two school mergers: Mohawk and Ilion merged to become Central Valley, and Oppenheim-Ephratah merged with St. Johnsville to become part of Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES.
The mergers decreased the number of Herkimer BOCES component school districts from 12 to 10, so Vivacqua recommended aligning the Board of Education to have one member per school district. BOCES board members do not receive pay, so the change doesn’t affect the cost of BOCES services.
Board members unanimously approved the reconfiguration in October pending approval from the New York State Education Department, and the state later approved the plan.
Linda Tharp was elected in April during the annual BOCES budget and Board of Education vote to fill the 10th board seat, and board members William Miller, Larry Thibault and Scott Tranter were re-elected.
The new board met for the first time on July 10 and re-elected LaLonde as president and Shypski as vice president.
LaLonde has been serving on the Herkimer BOCES Board of Education since 2004 including four years as vice president. He was elected to the Ilion Board of Education in 1999, where he recently served as board president, and was elected as a member of the Central Valley School District Board of Education. He retired from the Ilion Fire Department after a career-ending injury in 1992.
Shypski, a water supervisor for the village of Richfield Springs, was elected to the Herkimer BOCES Board of Education in 2009. He also serves on the Richfield Springs Board of Education.
In addition to LaLonde, Shypski, Tharp, Miller, Thibault and Tranter, the other members of the board are Daniel Voce, William Dodge, Michele Szarek and Robert Maxwell.
