Get a haircut and help students prepare for a cosmetology career
March 7, 2012

MaryBeth Napolitano, cosmetology instructor at Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, supervises as senior students perform pedicures for two clients on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, during the Cosmetology Clinic at Herkimer BOCES. (Left) Student Carlianna Stafford performs a pedicure for Sandra Mosenthin, and (right) student Emily Kaelin performs a pedicure for cosmetology graduate Joan Ploss. Both Mosenthin and Ploss are past-graduates of the cosmetology program.

How can sitting back and enjoying a pedicure spa help local high-school students?

Come and find out at the Cosmetology Clinic at Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.

The clinic offers a variety of services such as haircuts, manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials and hair coloring using special techniques such as foiling.

All services are performed by senior Herkimer BOCES students and are completely supervised by cosmetology instructors MaryBeth Napolitano and Holly Rotundo.

In addition to providing salon services to the community at discounted prices, the clinic also allows the students to perfect the skills needed to gain employment after they graduate, Napolitano said.

“This is where they’re getting their hands-on experience,” she said. “Because they get this experience, they are truly career-ready once they successfully complete the program.”

The Cosmetology Clinic is open from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays at the Herkimer BOCES campus at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer.

Open to all members of the community, the clinic is by appointment only. To make an appointment or schedule a consultation, call 867-2043.

A variety of the services are complimentary for current students in the 12 Herkimer BOCES component school districts.

Some services for students and all services for other members of the community have fees – such as $5 facials, $7 haircuts with styling, $13 Crystal Mud pedicures and $10 and up for permanent hair coloring services. Costs may increase for longer hair.

The clinic includes a newly renovated spa area, where services such as pedicure spas, facials and facial waxing are performed.

Only the finest products are used – such as Matrix, Lanza, Goldwell, KMS and OPI, just to name a few.

Proceeds from the clinic are used to help offset the cost of supplies used during the clinic.
