West Canada Valley superintendent resigns
for position with New Hartford school district

West Canada Valley board to appoint interim superintendent Aug. 25
Aug. 15, 2014

West Canada Valley Superintendent John Banek has resigned from his position and has accepted the job of director of athletics, health and safe schools for the New Hartford Central School District.

The West Canada Valley Board of Education met in special session Friday to accept the resignation.

“The board appreciates Mr. Banek’s service to our students and school community and wishes him well in his new position,” West Canada Valley Board of Education President Melissa Bolton said. “The board is working to assure a smooth transition to new leadership.”

Board members will meet again on Monday, Aug. 25, and anticipate appointing Nick Fazio as interim superintendent as they conduct a search for a permanent superintendent. Fazio retired as superintendent of the Richfield Springs Central School District. He has previously held interim superintendent positions for Ilion and Owen D. Young, as well as interim principal positions at West Canada Valley.

Banek released a statement about his time with West Canada Valley and his future.

“My decision to leave the superintendency at West Canada Valley was a highly personal one,” Banek said. “I cherish the countless relationships I have established during my tenure and am proud of the accomplishments achieved during my superintendency. I am most proud of the achievements of our students and staff during extremely challenging times in education.

“This new position, although challenging, will afford me the opportunity to get back to my roots and spend time in an area I truly enjoy. My experience at West Canada Valley has been a valuable professional experience that will certainly assist me in my new position at New Hartford Central School.  I thank everyone for the opportunity to serve the children and community of West Canada and now look forward to turning the page to what I hope is the final chapter in my career as I serve the students and community of New Hartford and return to athletics, which is the area I intended to work in.”
